We are a non-profit making organization duly incorporated in the State Department of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in October 1983 under Certificate No. 14008. The organization is operated by a Board of Directors elected by the membership in the Annual Assembly. The board  consists of professionals,  patient's relatives, and members of the community that offer their services without remuneration.

THE ASSOCIATION'S BACKGROUND

The Asociación de Alzheimer de Puerto Rico was founded in 1982 by a group of health  care professionals, relatives, and friends of those afflicted with Alzheimer's disease. 

The Asociación de Alzheimer de Puerto Rico is a member of Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) based in London, England  since 1991and  Alzheimer Ibero America based in Caracas, Venezuela since 2002. Aiming to reach our goals and objectives, the Asociación de Alzheimer de Puerto Rico has participated in diverse activities the world over in order to obtain information and the most recent developments in the management of this disease and other types of dementia.

The association has been represented in countries such as Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany,  Israel Mexico and Turkey in the International Congresses of Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI).

Our organization consists of active members, collaborators, relatives and friends of patients who are afflicted with this illness. We have a membership of approximately 500 members throughout the island.

Our mission is to offer our help and optimize the quality of life of patients, relatives, caregivers and the community through:

EDUCATION ·  COMMUNICATION ·  SERVICE about the disease to let them know that they are not alone in their fight against this illness. We continue in our quest to identify, compile and disseminate scientific findings regarding this devastating disease.

SERVICES WE OFFER

The association offers the following services free of charge:

  • Personal orientation, in writing or by telephone, to anyone who solicits information about the disease,  care for the patient, and  preventive measures in the management of the disease.

  • Consultation and training to public and private institutions about the illness and its effects, and support for their relatives.

  • Conferences and workshops to special groups such as health organizations, and related professionals.

  • Preparation and distribution of educational material including a quarterly Informative Bulletin, all distributed free of charge.

  • Offer referrals for specialized treatments.

  • Participation in Health Fairs and  Clinics throughout the island.

  • Respite program for family members and caregivers of Alzheimer's and other dementia patients.

  • Education for sixty plus generation.

  • Support groups, where family members and caregivers are heard, providing them with alternatives in how to best manage the patient.

  • Help line for family members and caregivers in the event of a crisis, operating from Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., which is answered by volunteers or health care professionals.
